GeoWine:
Geotraceability & Authentication
|
 |
|
Summary
GeoWine aims to develop a geotraceability and authentication system for wine produces
of the Midi-Pyrenees Region, but also for the rest of France as well as Europe.
The project will provide wine producers with a strong value-added tool, to be
used in response to future wine directives from The European Commission's
Department of Agriculture.
The objective is to create a geotraceability integrated system (GTIS) for the wine
industry. This integrated system will be comprised of several characteristics:
- It will rely, in an efficient manner, on data relative to the environment of zones of production,
traceability data, analytical data, and specific applications.
- It will permit the rapid access to multidisciplinary data from different sources (regional
administrations, national administrations, research institutions, public
services, and producers and their associations)
- It will supply data and the necessary information to attain the project's multiple objectives
(specifically the calculating of geo-indicators)
- It will require cooperation among
"old management" and the new data.
- And it will require the establishment of services and IT infrastructures permitting the sharing of
standardized information among partners.
Currently, Europe is the number one producer, consumer and exporter of wines in the world.
Now with the introduction of "New World Wines," from Australia, Chile, South
Africa, USA and Argentina, comes the need for further regulation; regulation
specifically pertaining to the question of origin. Many of the wines of these
new countries display forthright a brand, the grapes used, and the percentage
of alcohol. Marketing efforts of these
new wines are aimed towards young consumers and women (for instance with the
usage of funny packaging and easy labels to memorize).
Currently, the EU is preparing a new Directive (regulation) that will affect all actors of
the wine industry. This directive will aim to improve the quality and to reform
and simplify the bottle labelling, taking into account the new competition and
the recovery effort to recuperate lost market share. For the reasons listed above GeoWine will be an influential asset in the
present and the future.
GeoWine has three objectives:
- To anticipate directives from the European Commission concerning wines (directives aiming to
reform and to simplify bottle labelling)
- To better prevent forgery,
which today represents 8-10% of international commerce and 20-30% of wine
in certain countries
- To develop a partnership
between research enterprises who together will develop a new innovative
geotraceability product in authentication.

The principal research steps that will drive this project are as follows:
- To put in place a geotraceability integrated system permitting on one hand the
certification of the geographic origin of the wine and on the other hand
the circulation of supplementary reassured information to consumers, on the "best
practices" used by the produce to fabricate the wine.
- To create a geotraceability
usage reference model for the development of new "best practices" to be
shared with producers and cooperatives in the wine sector.
- To develop an innovative
interface between the system of authentication and the geotraceability
integrated system
- To measure the acceptability of
the proposed solution under the auspices of those in the wine sector and
consumers
- To conduct research on the materials and methods enabling the
industrialization of GeoWine
